The Battle Of Somme at first sight seems to have served no purpose. British Prime Minister Asquith had to resign for losing so may men for no territorial gains. The general at Somme, Haig was criticized for losing so may men. But Somme was important in two ways. First it eased the pressure on the French battling the Germans at Verdun. Secondly General Haig's policy of attrition was successful in tiring the Germans. Hindenburg in his memoirs writes that Germany understood that it could scarcely suffer many more Verdun and Somme.
